Educational Policy Issue

An educational policy issue that has been going on is the issue dealing with Mississippi passing the bill to get charter schools.

What are charter schools you ask?

Charter schools are public schools that receive public funding, but are operated independently and are not subject to many of the regulations that apply to other public schools.

I know what your thinking.. Why does this matter? That is just more job opportunities right?

In a way it is but depending on the state, charter school teachers DO NOT have to be a certified teacher.

Yes, you read that right. We, CERTIFIED TEACHERS, could possible be not hired over someone who are not certified.

I am obviously against charter schools (if you couldn't tell) because I just don't like the thought of people who aren't a certified teacher to be teaching young minds the fundamentals of life.

The House and the Senate must agree before it can go to Gov. Phil Bryant, who supports charter schools.

Let's keep our fingers crossed that whatever happens, happens for a reason whether we can see the reasoning for it now or not.

  1. Jessie, I'm so glad you brought up the issue of charter schools in your post! There are good points to them, as well, but it is definitely a controversial topic. I encourage you to do more research to find out what charter schools are and how they look in other states. Georgia and Colorado have some high quality charter schools, but there are definitely failing ones, as well. This would be a great issue for us to further research and discuss in class, if you all are interested.

  2. Jessie, I don't know how I would feel about teachers who are not charter schools getting jobs that certified teachers could have. Although I don't like this idea I do think that there are some quality charter schools! Check out Urban Prep in Chicago! It is a WONDERFUL charter school.

  3. If I am not mistaken, the charter school bill passed not too long ago. I also do not like the idea of a non-certified teacher teaching children in schools today. I think that there is a reason why people have to go through what they do in order to become teachers. Teachers are supposed to know what to teach, how to teach, and be able to help the students reach their full potential.
